Description
Overview This project started with the prompt of a "Media Museum". We wanted to have a public gathering space, so we integrated the highline into our project to create two levels of public park. On both the ground level and up on the highline. However, my partners and I decided to explore the idea of a museum that's main function is media storage as opposed to media display. We also wanted to explore how that media would be stored, and the resources required to upkeep the physical space it was kept in.
The main massing is a rectangular prism filled data towers, where the digital media is stored. However all of that needs to be cooled correctly, so we developed a system that brings in water from the Hudson, uses it to cool the data towers, and then is filtered through algae tanks on the facade and back out into the river. The algae is bioluminescent and glows when it is moved around in water, so we used timed air bursts in the tanks to serve as a secondary display. Air pumped into the tanks at varying intervals can create patterns, images, and display text on the facade as a secondary method of display.
